Is "Browning" White Fat the Future for Obesity Treatment?
Steve: A new signaling pathway to combat excess body mass has been found. An international team of researchers discovered a new way to stimulate brown fat and thus burn energy from food: The body's own adenosine activates brown fat and "browns" white fat.


Humans have two different types of fat: undesirable white fat cells which form bothersome "love handles," for example, as well as brown fat cells, which act like a desirable heater to convert excess energy into heat. 


Adenosine is released in brown fat by something called receptor A2A. White fat cells normally cannot be induced to burn excess fat by adenosine because they lack the A2A receptor. However, when a team of scientists transferred the A2A receptor gene from brown fat cells to white fat cells, the white fat started to "melt" away.


While clinical application is still far off, the search is on for adenosine-like substances or finding a method, such as smart nanoparticles, that can automatically transplant A2A receptors from brown fat cells to white.

Chances Are You're Not Eating Enough Protein
Don't Scrimp. You're Missing Out.

Bonnie: A study in last month's The Journal of Nutrition stated that the dietary protein requirement for female adults over 65 needs to be higher than current recommendations. While the study focused on this age demographic, most age and gender demographics are woefully low in protein consumption. That is, unless you have followed my advice over the years. This study claims that Recommended Daily Allowance (RDA) should be revised to mirror recent research.


A separate study that also appeared in the same issue of The Journal of Nutrition found that current protein intake recommendations for healthy pregnant women are based on calculations from nonpregnant adults and a new estimate of protein requirements based on pregnancy-specific data is needed.

A third study from the same issue dispels two common misconceptions about dietary protein in diabetes management: that a certain amount of the protein consumed is converted into blood glucose and that consuming too much protein can lead to diabetic kidney disease. The study suggests 30% of total energy intake as protein is the minimumgoal. Protein intake of this amount can be beneficial by improving glycemic control, aiding in satiety (feeling of fullness) and preservation of lean body mass during body mass reduction in those with both diabetes and prediabetes.


A study in the December issue of Nutrition and Metabolism acknowledges how sustained satiety is a key component to reduction of body mass. Protein is the most satiating macronutrient. Satiety was significantly greater after a 60% protein meal than after a 19% protein meal in the study. While we certainly would not recommend meal distribution this high in protein unless we know your individual needs, it is compelling nonetheless. They indicated an increased satiety response especially to whey and pea protein when testing protein powders.


Everyone's protein needs are different. However, if you suffer from the following, try increasing your protein intake:

K to the Second Power.
Recently, we told you about two food items,kalettes and kaniwa, that will be on your grocery store shelves in short order. One client said she found kalettes at Trader Joes already. Here's a complete chicken dinner recipe that includes those items.

1 T. extra virgin olive oil

1 yellow onion, thinly sliced

1 large red bell peppers, thinly sliced

4 cloves garlic, minced

4 (4- to 6-oz) skinless, boneless chicken breast halves

1/4 c. unsalted chicken stock

¼ tsp sea salt

¼ tsp ground white pepper

⅓ cup balsamic vinegar or rice vinegar

1 (15-oz) can imported diced tomatoes, well drained (preferably no salt added)

Side dish

4 cups fresh kalette (kale and Brussels sprouts hybrid)

2 cloves garlic

1 T. extra virgin olive oil



Coat a large sauté pan with oil, and preheat the pan over medium-high heat. Add onion, garlic, and bell pepper and sauté for 3 minutes. Season chicken breasts with salt and pepper. Add chicken breasts to the pan and cook for 4 minutes on each side. Add vinegar stock and tomatoes, and bring liquids to a boil. Reduce the heat to low, and simmer uncovered for 25 minutes, stirring occasionally. Serve with quinoa and sautéed kalette with olive oil and garlic. SERVES: 4 (If you cannot find Kalette and Kaniwa in your area, replace with kale and quinoa)

Decaffeinated Green Tea Extract

Supplements of green tea extract may enhance performance in active men by improving metabolic efficiency and economy. Green tea extracts also led to greater body fat reductions compared to placebo, as reported in a new study from Journal of the International Society of Sports Nutrition.


The subjects were given a decaffeinated green tea extract supplement equivalent to consumption of 6-7 cups of green tea per day. They believe EGCG (epigallocatechin gallate) is the key functional ingredient. Each subject received the equivalent of 400 mg EGCG per day in the supplement.


Fat oxidation rates increased by almost 25% in the green tea extract group, but no changes were observed in the placebo group. Significant decreases in body fat were observed in the green tea extract group (1.63%), in contrast to the placebo group. The green tea extract group also exhibited a 10.9% improvement in endurance.


Steve: If you don't feel comfortable taking a green tea extract, you will certainly still benefit from drinking organic green tea. The extract is just considered more therapy than lifestyle food.

Kids Going to and From School: Harmless Right?

Kids who ride home from school - whether in a car or on a bus - eat more snacks and candy during that window of opportunity than those who get home under their own steam. The researchers thought that fourth and fifth grade kids who walk or bike to and from school might have more chances to buy junk foods along the way, but found it was the "passive commuters" who rode to or from school who ate more snacks, according to the study from Journal of Preventive Medicine.


Steve: Remedy this by sending them to and from school with a healthy, balanced mini snack. Kids get mighty hungry from a long car or bus ride.

Adrenals Glands Get Fatigued

Stress can affect your adrenals, but they are not fatigued. They're also not tired, burned out, or collapsed. What is happening instead is that a delicate system, in which the adrenals operate, has been thrown out of rhythm.


The adrenal glands work as part of several glands that control our energy and metabolism. This group of glands is known of as the HPA (Hypothalamic Pituitary Adrenal) axis. When we are healthy, this system is able to gently adjust the rhythm of adrenal hormones to meet our immediate needs. This condition has been called HPA stress or more simply, adrenal stress. This is not the same as adrenal fatigue because there is no claim that the adrenals are unable to make enough cortisol.


Bonnie: Scientists know that a large number of factors unique to modern life can make adrenal stress more of a problem today than ever before. Of course, managing stress is number one. Environmental toxins, inadequate sleep, and not adhering to an optimal diet are next.

It's Never too Late to Run.
Running as a habitual exercise at any stage in life does NOT increase a person's risk of developing knee osteoarthritis, and may even help protect a person from developing the painful disease, according to new research presented at a recent American College of Rheumatology Annual Meeting. 

Of the 2,683 participants, 56 percent were female, the mean age was 64.5, most of which had not run before. Regardless of the age when they ran, the subjects had a lower prevalence of knee pain than non-runners.

Omega-3's Shine on Depression

Evidence that depressive symptoms are related to omega-3 fatty acid deficiency is growing among United States adults. A Journal of Nutrition study assessed whether depressive symptoms were inversely associated with omega-3 fatty acid intakes in 1746 adults (aged 30-65 years). Depression prevalence was 18.1% among men and 25.6% among women. In women, the uppermost intake of omega-3s (compared with the lowest intake) was associated with49% reduced odds of depression symptoms. In sum, among United States women, higher intakes of omega-3 fatty acids relative to omega-6 fatty acids were associated with a significantly lower risk of depressive symptoms.

Is Your Commute Bringing You Down?

The more time you spend getting to and from work, the less likely you are to be satisfied with life, says a new study from World Leisure Journal. The research reveals exactly why commuting is such a contentment killer--and surprisingly, traffic isn't the only reason to blame.


While commuting has long been thought to have some upsides, like providing time to unwind and transition from the workday, the new findings suggest that on top of being linked to lower life satisfaction, long commute lengths are related to an increased sense of time pressure, which can increase stress levels.


Commuters who had time for physical leisure had higher life satisfaction. Longer commutes mean less time for other activities, which leads to lower life satisfaction.


Steve: Flexible work hours or providing time for physical leisure can pay dividends. See if it is possible to work it into your lifestyle. If you don't have a choice, you can do isometric exercises while you're driving. This is the practice of contracting and releasing certain muscle groups. For example, you can easily squeeze your abs for 15 to 20 seconds at a clip while you are driving. It can even make you sore if you do it enough!
