Dear Valued Subscriber,

Did you know that an old-fashioned remedy for leg cramps is a spoonful yellow hot dog mustard? Nobody is sure if it is the vinegar, magnesium, or turmeric, but people swear by it. One to three teaspoons is a typical dose.

Researchers Flip Over Fish Oil

Until recently, scientists were not entirely sure about fish oil's immune enhancing effects. A new report appearing in the Journal of Leukocyte Biology, helps provide clarity on this by showing that DHA-rich fish oil enhances B cell activity, a white blood cell, that could benefit immunocompromised individuals. The DHA-enriched fish oil also enhanced select antibody production, which may actually aid immune responses associated with pathogen clearance, while possibly dampening the totality of the inflammatory response.

The highest levels of plasma omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA), as measured in 2500 older adults initially without coronary heart disease or a history of stroke, predicted the lowest mortality in a new Annals of Internal Medicine study. In the highest quintile of omega-3 PUFA levels, all-cause mortality fell by 27%, and the rate of arrhythmic death, in particular, fell by nearly one-half. In this population, starting at age 65, researchers estimated that they would live an 2.2 extra years.

According to a study in American Journal of Critical Care, the addition of fish oil to the nutritional regimen of critically ill patients in the ICU slows the progression of pressure ulcers. The slowing in progression was associated with a decrease in the levels of C-Reactive Protein, suggesting the effect was mediated by anti-inflammatory mechanisms. The researchers suggest more studies that include assessment of tissue physiology are warranted to determine the mechanisms by which fish oil and micronutrients facilitate wound healing.
