Dear Valued Subscriber,

Did you know that a new study published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences suggests that a high dose of B vitamins could stop the onset of Alzheimer's by preventing shrinkage of the medial temporal lobe, the area of the brain that defines the disease?

Researchers found that part of the brain shrank slower in elderly people with mild cognitive impairment when they took a combination of vitamin B12, B6, and folic acid over a two year period versus the placebo group. In those with high homocysteine levels, disease shrank eight times more slowly in those taking B vitamins than in those on the placebo

Have a happy, healthy week. Bonnie and Steve Minsky

Compound That Makes Cancer Cells Normal?
Apigenin Predominately Found in Veggies.
New research suggests that a compound takes away cancer cells' "superpower" to escape death. By altering a very specific step in gene regulation, the compound, apigenin, essentially re-educates cancer cells into normal cells that die as scheduled.
One way that cancer cells thrive is by inhibiting a process that would cause them to die on a regular cycle that is subject to strict programming. The Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences study found that apigenin, abundant in certain plant-based foods, could stop breast cancer cells from inhibiting their own death.
Parsley and celery contain the most apigenin, but it is also found in many fruits and vegetables. The authors state that the beneficial effect on health is attributed to this dietary nutrient affecting many proteins. In its relationship with a set of specific proteins, apigenin re-establishes the normal profile in cancer cells.
Abnormal splicing is the culprit in an estimated 80 percent of all cancers. In cancer cells, two types of splicing occur when only one would take place in a normal cell -- a trick on the cancer cells' part to keep them alive and reproducing. Apigenin restored this single-splice characteristic to breast cancer cells, suggesting that when splicing is normal, cells die in a programmed way. So by applying this nutrient, we can activate that killing machinery.
This suggests that when we eat healthfully, we are actually promoting more normal splice forms inside the cells in our bodies. Apigenin has also shown in previous research to house anti-inflammatory activities.
