Dear Valued Subscriber,

Did you know that a study in the May issue of Cancer, Causes, and Control evaluated the impact of dietary intake of sugary foods and beverages, as well as added sugar and total sugar on endometrial cancer risk in women? Not surprisingly, women with the highest consumption of added sugar intake had significantly increased endometrial cancer risk versus women with the lowest consumption.

Did you know that our subscription eNewslettter, NCI Well Connect, is 40% off (49.99 from 79.99) this month?

Have a happy, healthy week. Bonnie and Steve Minsky

How Vitamin D Slows the Aging Process.
agingVitamin D may reduce telomere shortening through anti-inflammatory and anti-cell proliferation mechanisms. Longer telomeres have recently been linked to longer life as well as slowing down the aging process.
In the May issue of American Journal of Epidemiology, researchers examined the association between vitamin D and relative leukocyte telomere length by using both blood 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH)D) and 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D (1,25(OH)2D) biomarkers. Vitamin D biomarker levels and leukocyte telomere length were measured using plasma samples collected in 1989-1990 from participants of the Nurses' Health Study. Genotyping was performed on 480 participants on 12 single nucleotide polymorphisms in vitamin D-related genes.
Higher 25(OH)D levels were significantly associated with longer telomere length, especially when compared to the lowest levels. Vitamin D-related single nucleotide polymorphisms and 1,25(OH)2D levels were not significantly associated with telomere length.
Bonnie: While we have heard a good amount about telomeres over the last few years, researchers have begun to intensely focus on them and finding the triggers to prevent them from shortening. It is not a surprise that high vitamin D levels positively contribute to telomeres.
