NCI Well Connect Mid-Week Brief
June 10, 2015
Dear Steve,

DID YOU KNOW that according to laboratory tests posted in Journal of Applied Toxicology, two out of ten teethers, plastic toys used to sooth babies' teething ache, release endocrine disrupting chemicals? One product contained parabens, which are normally used as preservatives in cosmetics, while the second contains six so-far unidentified endocrine disruptors.

Common Cleaning Products Make Asthma, Allergies, and More Worse
Steve: Fumes from cleaning products can make existing asthma worse, according to a new study of female professional cleaning service employees in Occupational and Environmental Medicine.

Products such as bleach, glass cleaner, detergents and air fresheners were the major offenders.

On average, the women used just over two different types of cleaning products each day, and on about three out of every four working days the women were exposed to at least one strong irritant, such as ammonia, bleach or hydrochloric acid.

During the study period, 80 percent reported having at least one upper respiratory tract symptom, such as sneezing, scratchy throat and runny nose. The same percentage also reported at least one lower respiratory tract symptom, such as coughing, wheezing or chest pain.

Other recent studies have linked the chlorine in swimming pools and in bleach used for cleaning homes and schools to asthma and respiratory infections among swimmers and school children.

The American Lung Association (ALA) recommends that at least for the home, people use non-toxic cleaners, especially for those with asthma and allergies.

Another study indicted what many consider a "safe," commonly used household pesticide with ADHD in children and young teens.

Gluten Inflames Us All
Bonnie: In one of the first studies of its kind, researchers in this month's The Journal of Nutritionlinked inflammation to those eating gluten who did not have celiac disease.

The physiologic effects of gluten intake in individuals without celiac disease remained unknown until now.

In a pool of young adults, increased gluten intake was associated with increased concentrations of plasma alpha 2-macroglobulin, a marker of inflammation and cytokine release. This marker appears to be independent of celiac disease.

The implications of this study are huge because, like many food ingredients that preceded it (i.e. trans fat), there is really no good understanding on what is a safe level of gluten. Until there is, we do not recommend frequently consuming it.
