Celebrating 30 Years
NCI Well Connect: July 20, 2015
Dear Steve,

DID YOU KNOW that caffeinated and artificially sweetened beverages in young girls brings on early menarche (menses)? In a study from last week's American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, researchers followed girls aged 9-10 years for 10 years and found that the risk rose with each serving of either beverage. Add these to list of early menarche foods such as conventional milk/dairy consumption and high glycemic load foods.

Have a happy, healthy day. Steve and Bonnie

CDC Revelation Shocking
Steve: There was a shocking revelation in the May issue of British Medical Journal (BMJ). However, as we have seen time and again, when Big Pharma is involved, shocking revelations often get swept under the media's rug.

The latest involves the U.S. Centers for Disease Control (CDC). Journalist and Associate Editor of BMJ, Jeanne Lenzer, discovered a gross lack of transparency at the CDC Foundation, which takes donations to fund public health campaigns.

Lenzer found that the CDC Foundation took donations specifically earmarked for the CDC's "Take 3" campaign recommending antiviral drugs for the flu. The campaign donation was funded by the manufacturer for the flu antiviral drug the CDC was recommending. This information was not listed on the CDC Foundations audited statements and had to be extracted by laborious investigative work.

Even more revealing is a CDC disclaimer which can be found on the hepatitis C guideline stating that, "CDC, our planners, and our content experts wish to disclose they have no financial interests or other relationships with the manufacturers of commercial products . . . CDC does not accept commercial support." Yet, Lenzer says, the manufacturers of hepatitis C drugs and test kits gave millions of dollars in directed donations to the CDC's Viral Hepatitis Action Coalition, which promotes expanded testing and treatment for Hep C.

For many facets of government, this revelation would have shaken a department, that is supposed to be of the highest moral ground, to its core. In the medical community, there was some outrage. Yet in the general public all you heard was crickets, and us.
