Supplements: Where's the Love?
Magnesium and B-Vitamins Are Vital. 

According to The Benefits of Nutritional Supplements, published by The Council for Responsible Nutrition, 80% of American men and women have daily magnesium intake below the RDA (Recommended Daily Allowance). We consider the RDAs to be woefully low for what most Americans need micronutrient-wise.

A new study in Nutrition Journal states that magnesium intake may be one of the most important factors for diabetes prevention and management. In the study, the relationship of magnesium intake with depression and physical activity in elderly patients with type 2 diabetes were investigated. Among all patients, 88.6% had magnesium intake which was less than the dietary reference intake, and 37.1% had hypomagnesaemia. Metabolic syndromes and depression were associated with lower magnesium intake
. Increased magnesium intake or magnesium supplementation is vital, especially in this population.
These two studies confirm that low magnesium is a public health crisis. 


With regard to B-vitamins, these studies appeared within the last month.


Vitamin B-6

In a journal Nutrition study, researchers found that people with the lowest levels of vitamin B6 in their blood had the highest levels of chronic inflammation. Those with the most vitamin B6 circulating in the bloodstream were the least likely to have indicators of inflammation. The vitamin B6 metabolite, Pyridoxal-5-Phosphate, was examined in this study.


Folic Acid

In a study from American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, mothers meeting at least 600 micrograms of folic acid per day in the first month of pregnancy was tied to a 38% lower chance of having a child with autism or Asperger's. 


A journal Nutrition study found that how well you metabolize (absorb) folic acid has everything to do with lowering your CVD risk.


Fetal folate deficiency increases the risk for childhood acute leukemia. The study from Cancer, Causes, and Control showed that maternal folic acid supplementation, as well as detecting potential genetic predisposition to metabolizing folic acid, are crucial for lowering risk. 


Finally, folic acid supplementation was found to be effective in stroke prevention, according to the International Journal of Clinical Practice.
