Dear Valued Client,

We keep you plugged into what's new in the world of nutrition, wellness, and public health. Email us if there is a particular topic you would like us to explore. Have a happy, healthy day!

The Folic Acid/Cancer Link.
Recently, we have received several inquiries from concerned clients because their doctors told them to stop taking the B-vitamin, folic acid, due to a suggested link to cancer. We think this is misinformed and potentially damaging advice. Last summer, we commented on this same issue. However, the misinformation is still circulating, so we are bringing you up to date on the latest research.

The Folic/Acid Cancer Link (full article)

A Happy Colon, A Happy Life.
We thought this was an excellent piece written by Dr. Cary Presant, MD. The only thing we did not care for was his list of substances for constipation and bowel regularity. So we are listing our Top 10 (number one being our favorite and ten being our least favorite choice):
  1. Olive Oil (2 T. daily)
  2. Fibersure (chicory root source; get at drugstore)
  3. Finely Ground Flaxseed (organic pulverized; 2 T. daily)
  4. Magnesium Oxide (250-400 mg.; we like Twinlab or Naturemade brands)
  5. Aloe Vera Capsules (we like Ortho Molecular brand)
  6. Vitamin C Levash (ask us for the protocol)
  7. Concoction of 1 T. unsulphured molasses, 2 T. finely ground flaxseed, and 4 prunes (soaked overnight in water)
  8. Methylcellulose (tree bark fiber; Citrucel is an easy brand to find but not our favorite)
  9. Milk of Magnesia (twice weekly max)
  10. Miralax (by prescription only; short-term)

In addition, you can always try our Smart Detox 2-Week Action Plan or Smart Cleanse 2-Week (vegan)

Sunbutter Cookies

Our alternative to peanut butter cookies.

-3/4 c. unsalted butter or trans-fat free margarine
-1 c. organic sugar or sweetener of choice (if liquid, reduce to 3/4 c. and 1/4 c. flour)
-2 eggs (preferably omega-3 eggs)
-1 tsp. organic vanilla extract
-2 c. organic flour (gluten or gluten-free)
-1 pinch salt
-3/4 c. Sunbutter brand sunflower seed butter
-1/2 c. dark chocolate chips
-flour for shaping

Directions: In the bowl of an electric mixer with the paddle attachment or whisk, cream the butter and sugar for one minute, scraping down the sides of the bowl once. Add the eggs and vanilla and continue beating at medium speed for 30 seconds. Add 1 cup flour along with the salt. Beat at low speed just until combined, scraping down the sides of the bowl. Beat in the remaining one cup of flour until the mixture forms as dough. Add Sunbutter and chocolate chips. Form into small balls and place in a muffin tin (little muffin papers work also). Set the oven at 350 degrees. Bake for 12 to 15 minutes or until they are lightly browned on the bottom and the edges are slightly golden (the tops of the cookies should be light in color). Store in airtight container for up to one week or freeze for up to two months.

Back to School.
While moms and dads are lamenting the fact that kids will be back in school soon (hah! hah!), and with Fall right around the corner, it is a good time to get their diets and lifestyles in order, as well as your own.

These wonderful resources can help you accomplish this:

1) Nutritional Concepts' School-Age Child Action Plan.

2) The Healthy Schools Campaign, a local nonprofit organization, puts out an incredible Wellness Guide.

These resources should be required reading for any parent. A recent study has shown that nutrition education programs in schools have been making progress, but slowly. You must take it upon yourselves to make a difference in your child's school district.
