Celebrating 30 Years
NCI Well Connect: August 24, 2015
Dear Steve,

DID YOU KNOW that antibiotics were discovered accidentally? British scientist Sir Alexander Fleming came back from a family trip in August 1928 to discover that a culture of Staphylococcus he'd left in his untidy laboratory had bafflingly vanished from its Petri dish after it became contaminated with a mystery fungus.

When Fleming grew this mold, he discovered it produced a bacteria-killing substance which for a time he called "mold juice". Realizing that this might not be the most palatable of brand names, a year later he rechristened it penicillin.

Little did Fleming know, however, he'd already been soundly beaten to the finish line in the race to develop antibiotics by an Egyptian. Around 2650 BC, an early physician called Imhotep reportedly treated infections by placing a slice of moldy bread over the wound!

Have a happy, healthy day. Steve and Bonnie

Only Proven Method to Prevent Mental Decline
Bonnie: Even after billions have been spent on research, no miracle drug for mental decline and disease exists. Researchers now admit that the best way to prevent mental decline and disease is optimizing diet and lifestyle.

As shown in a recent JAMA Internal Medicine study, the Mediterranean diet, supplemented with a handful of nuts or a few tablespoons of olive oil a day, can counteract the effects of aging on the brain's ability to function.

This study was so important because it involved cognitively healthy participants, 55 to 80 years of age, who were divided into three groups. Two groups followed the Mediterranean diet and added either 30 grams of mixed nuts (walnuts, hazelnuts and almonds) a day, or five tablespoons of extra virgin olive oil a day. The third group, acting as a control, was advised to follow a low-fat diet. The subjects were followed for just over four years.

The results showed that, compared with the control group, memory function remained stronger in the Mediterranean diet plus nuts group, while frontal (attention and executive function) and global cognition benefited in the Mediterranean diet plus olive oil group.

A study in Alzheimer's and Dementia states that lifestyle factors-not just genetics-play a prominent role in the development of Alzheimer's, and the researchers came up with their optimal diet to lessen the chances of developing the disease.

The MIND diet (similar to the Mediterranean Diet) has 15 dietary components: Green leafy vegetables; Other vegetables; Nuts; Berries; Beans; Whole grains; Fish; Poultry; Olive oil; Wine

Participants, aged 58 to 98, didn't have dementia at the start of the research. Over 4.5 years, subjects whose diet choices adhered closely to the MIND diet had a 53% reduced risk for developing Alzheimer's.
