Dear Valued Subscriber,

Did you know the only negative to making the switch from table salt to sea salt is that you may not be getting enough iodine? Whenever possible, choose iodized sea salt. Unfortunately, most brands contain maltodextrin, which is contraindicated in corn intolerant individuals. In this case, we would suggest getting at least 250 micrograms of potassium iodide daily from food and supplements.

Did you know that a journal Nutrition study found that multiple micronutrient supplementation in school-age children is beneficial for enhancing aerobic capacity and endurance in children?

Turn Genes On. Turn Genes Off.
Bonnie and Steve: More than 40 natural compounds can turn on genes that slow the spread of cancer, according to a first-of-its-kind study
in the journal Cancer and Metastasis Reviews. The authors suggest that diet, nutrients and plant-based chemicals appear to be opening many avenues of attack.

While focusing particularly on genes that suppress metastasis, they found substances like amino acids, vitamin D, ginseng extract, the carotenoid lycopene, the turmeric component curcumin, pomegranate juice, fish oil and others affecting gene expression in breast, colorectal, prostate, skin, lung and other cancers. Typically, the substances acted epigenetically, which is to say they turned metastasis suppressor genes on or off.

The researchers state that epigenetic mechanisms are influenced by what you eat. For many scientists, this is a new area of research that has not been well explored in terms of diet and nutrition. They now have a greater appreciation of the role of natural compounds in helping our bodies slow or stop the spread of cancer.

Those who have followed nutrigenomics and epigenetics for some time now should not be surprised by this finding. What excites us is that conventional medicine is finally acknowledging what many have already implemented in our practices. One nutraceutical manufacturer, Metagenics, has been screening natural substances against genetic expression for some time now.

Vitamin D Research Continues to Dominate Scientific Literature

Just in the last few months, we pinpointed 24 worthy studies, showing the importance of vitamin D for Bariatric Surgery, Bone Fractures, Cancer, Depression, Immune Response, Lung Function, Metabolic Syndrome, Mortality, Multiple Sclerosis, Obesity, Respiratory Infection, Stroke, Testosterone, Tuberculosis, and Weight Control.

Summaries of these studies are available to NCI Well Connect subscribers.
