Dear Valued Subscriber,

Did you know that 20,000 cancer cases might be prevented if half the U.S. population increased its fruit and vegetable consumption by one serving each per day? The findings appear in the upcoming December issue of Food and Chemical Toxicology.

Did you know celiac patients can receive tax deductions for expenses related to their gluten-free diet? Provide a doctor's note confirming a celiac diagnosis and save receipts for all gluten-free foods. The difference between the prices of gluten-free items compared to those of regular items is tax-deductible. Products that don't have a gluten-containing counterpart, such as xanthan gum and sorghum flour, are totally tax-deductible. Shipping costs for orders of gluten-free items are also tax-deductible. You must fill out a 1040 schedule A for medical deductions. For more information, contact a qualified accountant.

Have a happy, healthy week. Bonnie and Steve Minsky

CDC-Funded Researchers Not Thrilled With Existing Flu Vaccines.

The following excerpts from Expert Reviews Vaccines were written by three researchers who all receive contract funding from the CDC.

"The suboptimal effectiveness of influenza vaccines in both the very young and the very old further complicates safety concerns. Influenza vaccines have not been well studied in children younger than 6 months of age, and two doses of vaccine are required to generate an adequate immune response from 6 months to 8 years of life. Live Influenza vaccines have demonstrated a somewhat higher effectiveness, but the use of these vaccines is limited to only those over 2 years of age due to safety concerns in the very young.

In recent years, it has become apparent that influenza vaccines do not provide very high protection from the consequences of influenza infection (in the elderly).

Investigators must find better vaccines if making a substantial impact on preventing morbidity from influenza infection in the very young and the very old is expected."

Other key points made:

  • Systematic reactions such as fever, malaise, myalgia and headache may occur following administration of influenza vaccines, particularly among young children with no prior exposure to the influenza virus antigen. These reactions are generally mild and transient.
  • In recent years, an increased risk of febrile seizure following administration of particular types of influenza vaccine has been reported in parts of the world.
  • An increased risk of wheezing following administration of live attenuated influenza vaccines among children younger than 2 years of age has been reported.
  • While the majority of studies do not support an association, a very small increased risk of Guillain-Barré syndrome following administration of seasonal IIV has been reported in a few studies."
