Dear Valued Subscriber,

Did you know that frozen kale does not turn to mush when frozen, and it defrosts with a quick rinse in the colander? Add to scrambled eggs; stir-fry with shrimp and carrots; saute with sausage, mushrooms, and white wine; or blend into smoothies.

NCI News: Xylichew Gum is back! See details below.

Have a happy, healthy week. Bonnie and Steve Minsky

Acid/Alkaline Balance As Easy As 1, 2, 3.

The alkaline diet is growing in popularity. Simply, the belief is that we eat way too many acidic foods. The diet stresses eating and drinking as alkaline as possible. While it is true that we eat too many acidic foods, the fundamentals of the diet are flawed and can be dangerous.

The fact is that our digestive system needs an acidic environment. While we do not want it to be too acidic, we do not want it to be too alkaline. A 60/40 balance of acid to alkaline is ideal. Tip the scale to highly acidic and you have GERD and inflammation. Tip the scale to highly alkaline and you are exposed to myriad pathogens and infections that would otherwise be destroyed in a normal acidic digestive environment.

If you have a real acid problem, there are ways to address this intelligently through a knowledgeable health professional. Keeping an ideal acid/alkaline ratio is as easy as one-two-three:

  1. Eat real food.
  2. Eat at least 7-10 servings of fruits and vegetables daily.
  3. Eliminate added sugars/artificial sweeteners.

If you would like to get into more detail, NCI Well Connect members can request by email a complimentary copy of our Acid/Alkaline Food Chart.

Steve: If you suspect that you may be too acidic or too alkaline, stop by our office and you can test your saliva on pH paper. Most pharmacies carry pH paper as well.
