Did you know that Dr. Oz is at it again? On his show last week, Dr. Oz hailed the herb garcinia cambogia as a "revolutionary fat buster" and the "holy grail". Didn't he just say the same thing about raspberry ketones? Garcinia has been available as a dietary supplement for decades. It may be mildly successful for small reductions in body mass, but revolutionary? Hardly. Complementary supplement to accompany an ideal diet and exercise? Possibly.

Did you know that according to a study in Journal of Consumer Research, when offered something deemed less than nutritious, saying "I don't" instead of "no", subjects were 8 times more effective in deciding whether to eat the food. When comparing "I don't" to "I can't", subjects were three times more effective. The reason? "I don't" signals empowerment and determination rather than deprivation.

Too Much Calcium, Too Little, or Just Right?

We probably get this question more than any other. Why are clients getting mixed messages about how much supplemental calcium to take? Because for decades, the medical community recommended extremely high doses of calcium in one-size-fits-all fashion. This was extremely detrimental because too much calcium from poorly absorbed sources creates soft tissue calcification and magnesium deficiency. So what are many in the medical community doing now? They are not recommending supplemental calcium at all! This is ludicrous and downright dangerous. Here's why:

A new study in BMJ warns that a low calcium diet is associated with a higher risk of developing a common hormone condition in women, known as primary hyperparathyroidism. Primary hyperparathyroidism or PHPT is caused by overactive parathyroid glands secreting too much parathyroid hormone, which can result in weak bones, fractures and kidney stones.

In recent years, several studies have also suggested a link between untreated PHPT and an increased risk of high blood pressure, heart attack and stroke. It is most common in post-menopausal women between 50-60 years of age. Calcium intake is known to influence parathyroid hormone production. However, no study to date has explored this relation in detail.

In the study, 58,000 women were divided into five equal groups, according to intake of dietary calcium. In women taking a modest 500 mg per day of calcium supplements, the risk of developing PHPT was 59% lower than those taking no calcium supplements.

What have we done throughout the wide swings of the calcium pendulum? Implemented an individualized supplemental calcium approach based upon bloodwork, diet, medication intake, proper balance with magnesium and vitamin D, as well as utilizing the most well absorbed calcium source available. Seems reasonable enough?
