Dear Valued Subscriber,

Did you know that there is a controlled release skin barrier emulsion for atopic dermatitis called EpiCeram? It is steroid-free, fragrance-free made from ceramide, conjugated linoleic acid, and cholesterol in an emollient base. Now you can stop the topical steroids for AD!

Did you know that as we stated in our recently published Wellness for the New Senior Male Action Plan, we have not, and never will, recommend testosterone treatments. This stance proved prophetic in the most recent issue of Journal of the American Medical Association.

In the study, men in their 60s who used various testosterone treatments were 30 percent more likely to have heart attacks or stroke or to die during a three year period than men with low levels that did not take the treatments.

R.I.P Trans Fats: Please read our statement regarding our decades-long battle against trans fats that looks like it is finally come to an end.

Have a happy, healthy week. Bonnie and Steve Minsky

HDL Cholesterol: Unsung Hero?

High density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL), the so-called "good" cholesterol, improves blood glucose levels by enhancing skeletal muscle function and reducing adiposity (excess fat), according to a report in the current issue of the journal Circulation.

One of the strongest independent predictors of cardiovascular disease in type 2 diabetes patients is a low circulating level of high density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol and its major protein constituent apolipoprotein A-I (ApoA-I).

An international team of scientists have now determined that normal circulating HDL levels are required for proper skeletal muscle metabolism and function. Without ApoA-I, burning of calories is reduced in skeletal muscle resulting in increased blood glucose and weaker muscle function.

The scientists then determined that HDL cholesterol and its protein ApoA-I both enhance usage of glucose and calories inside muscle cells. Raising HDL and ApoA-I levels resulted in protection against hyperglycemia and age-related symptoms such as decline of muscle performance or fat mass gain. Improved calorie burning in mitochondria (the "power plants" of the cell) was further indicated.

Bonnie: The results link for the first time low HDL-cholesterol with impaired use of glucose and burning of calories in type 2 diabetes. Along with triglycerides, we can now add HDL as an under appreciated marker for therapeutic opportunities in diabetes. Most importantly, the results are highly relevant for women with type 2 diabetes. Risk for cardiovascular diseases compared to men with type 2 diabetes is significantly increased in women with low HDL levels.
