Some "Healthy Oils" Increase Risk of Heart Disease.

Some vegetable oils that claim to be healthy actually increase the risk of heart disease, and Canadian scientists are telling Health Canada that they should reconsider cholesterol-lowering claims on food labeling.


According to a review in Canadian Medical Association Journal, in 2009, Health Canada's Food Directorate approved a request from the food industry to apply a heart disease risk reduction claim on vegetable oils and foods containing these oils. The label suggests "a reduced risk of heart disease by lowering blood cholesterol levels."

However, careful evaluation of recent evidence suggests that allowing a health claim for vegetable oils rich in omega-6 linoleic acid but relatively poor in omega-3 alpha-linolenic acid is misguided.

Corn and safflower oil, which are rich in omega-6 linoleic acid but contain almost no omega-3 alpha-linolenic acid, are not associated with beneficial effects on heart health. The rates of death from all causes of cardiovascular disease and coronary artery disease significantly increased in study groups consuming these types of oils.
Steve: We have said for years that certain omega-6 vegetable oils do more harm than good because they cause inflammation. Corn and safflower oil are major offenders. While limited in endorsement verbage, the FDA still allows a label claim for corn oil for reduced heart disease benefits. Fat chance getting them to eliminate it when the head of the USDA is from the corn-growing state of Iowa.
This is why we always stress balancing your oils: equal amounts of omega-3 to omega-6 and mild amounts of saturated fats (yes, they are essential).
