Dear Valued Subscriber,

Did you know that the FDA has approved a diagnostic imaging system (SoftVue) that uses ultrasound technology to provide accurate operator-independent 3-dimensional images of the entire breast in 1 to 2 minutes?

Patient benefits include a lack of painful breast compression; women simply lie down on a comfort pad while the breast is suspended in a warm water bath, surrounded by a soft pliant membrane that accommodates all breast sizes and contours to the chest wall.

Bonnie: Unlike mammography, the device offers the ability to detect masses in woman with dense breast tissue, and is able to do so without the use of radiation. Hopefully, it will prove to be a more cost-effective methodology than an MRI of the breast. The exam is also much quicker than an MRI and does not require the use of intravenous contrast

Did you know that in the last few years, coffee has solidified its position as a healthful beverage? See the latest study in "eAlerts".

Mediterranean Continues to Hit Home Runs.
Positive Studies Coming in Waves

Cognitive Function
In participants at high vascular risk, after a nutritional intervention comparing two Mediterranean Diets (supplemented with either extra-virgin olive oil (EVOO) or mixed nuts) versus a low-fat control diet, the diets enhanced with either EVOO or nuts improved cognition significantly compared with a low-fat diet. The study appeared in the December issue of Neurology, Neurosurgery, and Psychiatry.

According to a study in the upcoming March issue of American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, participants who adhered more closely to a Mediterranean Diet were associated with a greatly reduced risk of head and neck squamous cell carcinoma compared with those who did not adhere to the diet.

A Mediterranean diet supplemented with extra-virgin olive oil cut the risk for developing type 2 diabetes by about a third among adults at high risk for cardiovascular disease compared with a low-fat diet, according to new analysis in the January 6th issue of Annals of Internal Medicine
In a study in the January issue of British Journal of Nutrition, a high Mediterranean Diet Score in a large group of Danish subjects was associated with lower total mortality and with cardiovascular and myocardial infarction incidence and mortality.

Greater adherence to a dietary pattern approaching the traditional Mediterranean diet was associated with a reduction in the risk of all-cause mortality among middle-aged Spanish adults, according to a study in the January issue of Journal of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.

Bonnie: Add the paleo eating style component and you have a magnificent plan!
