Dear Valued Subscriber,

Did you know that according to a study in the November issue ofAmerican Journal of Clinical Nutrition, photoprotection through individual dietary components such as beta carotene or lycopene in terms of sun protection, while lower than that achieved by using topical sunscreens, can support the production of an optimal supply of antioxidant micronutrients in the skin, thus increasing basal dermal defense against UV irradiation, supporting longer-term protection, and contributing to maintenance of skin health and appearance? Keep that in mind when going to a sunny place for the holidays.

Did you know that adolescent athletes who slept eight or more hours each night were 68 percent less likely to be injured than athletes who regularly slept less, according to a study presented at the American Academy of Pediatrics National Conference?

Have a happy, healthy week. Bonnie and Steve Minsky

Your Voice Was Heard Loud and Clear.

The nutrition community bill that we asked you to support passed the Senate unanimously last Friday, 51 to 0. This is a very big step. Your support is truly humbling.

We now have one more, urgent step. We need to pass the bill through the Illinois House of Representatives. Today, we need to make big noise in the House, where the registered dietitian association is working hard to thwart our bill. We urgently request one more push of faxes, this time to the members of the Illinois House.

As you did last week, please cut and paste the following letter and fax to your Illinois House Representative. You can find your IL house rep byclicking this link.

Message: Please Support Senator Martinez's Dietetic and Nutrition Services Practice Act

Dear [Decision Maker],

I am voicing my strong support for the Senator Martinez-sponsored bill regarding dietetic and nutrition services. The language was developed in conjunction with the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation and addresses the important needs of the nutrition community and consumers of nutrition services.
The bill opens what had essentially been a monopoly on nutrition services in Illinois for Registered Dietitians, so that consumers may access expert advice from multiple types of highly qualified nutrition practitioners. This bill is the culmination of discussions throughout 2012 among key legislators, the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation, and many individuals and groups with an interest in the issue.
The Senator Martinez-sponsored bill would:

Expand choice and improve health in Illinois. Consumers have a right to choose a nutrition advisor from a range of providers, not just dietitians. This bill creates a pathway to licensure for highly credentialed nutritionists, and strengthens exemptions to assure no undue restriction on nutrition information, such as from health food stores and employees.
Support job creation. Nutrition is a tremendous source of job growth in counseling, retail sales, training, agriculture, and manufacturing. Senator Martinez' bill creates a hospitable environment for practitioners and businesses in Illinois.

Take nothing away from dietitians. It preserves all current rights of registered dietitians, and in no way reduces their scope of practice. It simply provides additional avenues for nutrition advice beyond the dietitian pathway.

I urge you to support the nutrition community and the Senator Martinez-sponsored bill. Your support will help create a level playing field and to promote the health and safety of Illinois residents through access to qualified nutrition professionals and nutrition information.

More Magnesium Please.
According to a study in the November 21st issue ofCirculation, low levels of serum magnesium are associated with an increased risk of developing Atrial Fibrillation (AF).

"If confirmed, our observations may have important public health implications, because the prevalence of AF is increasing, and magnesium deficiency is common and potentially modifiable," writes the lead researcher.

The investigators studied 3530 participants who had a routine examination and were free of AF and cardiovascular disease. During nearly 20 years of follow-up, 228 individuals developed AF. Compared with individuals in the highest quartile for serum magnesium, those with low levels had a 54% increased risk of developing AF.
The researchers add that magnesium plays a role in the heart's conduction system, including the sodium-potassium ATP pump. Disrupting or altering the function of the pump due to low magnesium levels might play a role in "myocardial excitability."
Bonnie: While the researchers allude to magnesium supplementation as a potential therapy to reduce AF risk, they said more research is needed. I have found that raising magnesium levels is near impossible from diet alone, so supplementation is the only option. A multitude of bodily functions will also benefit from supplemental magnesium.
