We Want Your Feedback.

2007 NCI Survey

Natural Travel Remedies.
 For Motion Sickness:
-Keep your head still.
-Rest your head still and against your seat.
-Don't read.
-Focus on a stationary, distant object.
-Avoid spicy foods, alcohol, or overeating.
-Drink sparkling water if stomach is upset.

To Avoid Jet Lag:
-Adjusting Sleep and Wake Time - adjust bed and wake time according to the destination time prior to traveling. It involves waking up and going to bed one hour progressively earlier/later (depending on which way you are traveling) each day for three days. If traveling eastward, go to sleep one hour earlier and wake up one hour earlier on day one. The opposite would be if traveling westward. Work your way up to however many hours of time difference there is to your destination.
-Homeopathy: certain brands offer specific jet lag formulas. Look at ingredients for any potential allergens or intolerants before purchasing.

Alternative Sweeteners - Bonnie Approved.
Stevia. Most of you who are clients know that we are and have been big proponents of stevia (pictured here). Within the next few years, stevia will explode into the mainstream market, partially due to Coca Cola and Cargill pushing to get it approved as a food additive, not just a dietary supplement (its designation to date). Approval as a food additive will open up a plethora of product opportunities for food companies. Our hope is that stevia will overtake and far surpass the crop of awful artificial sweeteners that dominate the market. New development: a study to be published in the 1/08 issue of Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry found stevia to be very high in antioxidants, thus reducing DNA damage.

Xylitol. This polyol (alcohol ester of sugar) has several benefits. First, it fights tooth decay. Many of you have probably heard about it through your dentist. Second, xylitol is extremely low calorie and glycemic load. One note of caution: it can have a laxative effect in large amounts. Also, much of the xylitol on the market is corn-derived. For those of you who are corn intolerant, seek out xylitol products derived from birch bark, such as Xylichew Gum that we carry.

Lo han. This fruit offers sweet compounds that resist human degradation and lack calories and glycemic properties. While Lo han has extremely low toxicity in rats, long term human studies are lacking.

Agave nectar. While considered a sugar, it has very low glycemic index and load. It is also well tolerated because of its low allergenicity. This would be our recommendation if you do not tolerate or enjoy the previous three suggestions.

Nostradamus of Nutrition.

More than any year in recent memory, 2007 has been one of validation for Nutritional Concepts.

While we have been guilty of "tooting our own horn" from time to time, the following principles we have adhered to from the beginning have us very excited because they are now being accepted by science and the public at-large.

Top 10 of 2007
  1. Magnesium, Omega-3's, Vitamin D, and Probiotics have exploded onto the scene (we have blogged anywhere from 12-30 positive studies for each of these nutrients in 2007).
  2. Calcium revealed: recommended intake for adults is too high and can be detrimental to health in excess if not properly absorbed. Calcium is only one cog in the bone building wheel and relies on many other factors for its success.
  3. Epigenetics takes center stage. The National Institute's of Health now considers Epigenetics one of its four highest research priorities.
  4. Toxic load contributes to obesity and reducing exposure is crucial to overall wellness.
  5. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) is ill-equipped to protect the public's safety from the dangers of medications and food.
  6. Food intolerances (cytotoxic reactions, not allergies) are much more prevalent than once believed.
  7. Diet and lifestyle choices for prenatal, pregnant, and nursing women is the most important factor for producing a healthy child.
  8. Celiac disease takes much longer to diagnose than it should. Celiac and gluten intolerance are much more common than once believed.
  9. Users of dietary supplements are in overall better health than non-users.
  10. Prevention through diet and lifestyle is the best cure for Alzheimer's.

Honorable Mention:

  1. Quercetin is a powerhouse antioxidant for inflammation. It's the main ingredient in Allergy Fighters, a nutrient complex we have been recommending for over 20 years.
  2. Food additives raise hyperactivity in children.
  3. Mediterranean-style diet is the best for overall long-term health.
  4. Virtual Colonoscopy is as accurate as regular colonoscopy.
  5. Vitamin E is back and better than ever. As we have steadfastly said, it is never harmful when prescribed properly.

December Announcements.
announce -Long-term beta carotene may slow mental decline. One of the first studies ever done on healthy subjects looking at long-term prevention. A must read.

-Study warns on safety of potential weight-loss blockbuster Acomplia. We reported on the side effects of this drug back in June. Sanofi was touting this as one of the biggest blockbuster drugs in history. Right now, it has a lot of work to do to get approved.

-A stunning consumer report was published by the Food & Drug Administration regarding dietary supplements. We believe that this is their first admission that dietary supplements serve a purpose.

-Studies support Metagenics Kaprex, which we commonly recommend for inflammation. Clients have been very pleased with the relief they see in joint pain particularly. However, this product is not recommended for salicylate-sensitive individuals.

-As cloned food approaches shelves, opposition increases.

Healthy Holiday Tips.
Now is the time to prepare yourself for the holiday onslaught. As many agree, "the holidays can be a blessing and a curse." Stress, poor diet, and depression are common for many during this time. Here are a few tips to help you through.

10 Dietary Tips for Healthy Holidays.

Emotional Survival Guide for the Holidays.

Our mid-November "Special Report" installment explains that testosterone levels in men declines one percent a year after the age of 50. The decline comes with an array of "change of life" symptoms such as loss of muscle mass, fatigue, depression, erectile dysfunction, and even hot flashes. The condition is hard to test for and even more difficult for a man to discuss, so it usually flies under the radar. However, as studies begin to link low testosterone with infertility, heart disease, cognitive decline, and bone loss, practitioners are beginning to take notice.

In a groundbreaking study that appears in the December issue of Circulation, researchers claim that higher circulating levels of testosterone appear to protect men from all manner of causes of death. Subjects in the upper 25 percent of natural testosterone levels had a 41 percent lower risk of dying from heart attack, stroke, other cardiovascular conditions, cancer, and all other causes of death.

While just one study, if further research concurs with this finding, it is imperative that men follow some of the protocols explained in the following.
