NCI Well Connect Mid-Week Brief
February 22, 2017
Dear Steve,

DID YOU KNOW that a study in this week's JAMA Internal Medicine, among patients with migraine without aura, true acupuncture was associated with long-term reduction in recurrence compared with sham acupuncture? Treatment was five days per week for four weeks for a total of 20 sessions.

We are the first midwest distributor of this scrumptious snack. Like real food? How about only two ingredients: mango and coconut. We can't sell them over the web yet, but we carry them in our office or you can call/email/add to web ordering instructions if you want to buy a package(s).

Have a happy, healthy day. Steve and Bonnie
Vinegar and Fermented Food Craze Is Out of Control
Bonnie and Steve: The lovely images you see are of the fermented drink kombucha. The waxy, alien-type substance these brave hands are yanking out above is the scoby. The liquid beneath the scoby is what you drink when you buy it at your local health food store. Yeesh!

In the health food industry, this is the year of fermented food and drink, as well as vinegar products. It is a nightmare for wellness advisors like us who have never followed 'hot trends" when they do not serve your best interest.

There is a place in our diet for fermented foods such as sauerkraut. But certain individuals can find themselves MUCH worse off if they decide to frequently consume fermented and/or vinegar-laden foods.

For example, vinegar, including the much ballyhooed apple cider vinegar, is highly yeast-producing, especially in those with a history of yeast infections or candida.

You may have guessed that fermented foods are also major yeast-producers.

Can you presume which food is high in salicylic acid, which is poison for those who are intolerant? Yep, vinegar.

Let's not forget that most of us get our daily fill of vinegar just in the salad dressing we consume.

Curious as to some of the most acidic foods we can consume? Sorry to break it to you, but fermented foods. If you have heartburn or have struggled with balancing acid and alkaline foods, fermented foods are not be a great choice.

Enough browbeating. There is a place for vinegars and fermented foods in our diet. Consumed in moderation, they can be extremely healthful. However, if overconsumed, or eaten by those who have yeast issues, acidosis, salicylate intolerance, and/or reflux, fermented foods and vinegars can be extremely unhealthful.
