NCI Well Connect Mid-Week Brief
February 3, 2016
Dear Steve,

DID YOU KNOW that forming memories of meals is important to a healthy diet?Disrupting the encoding of the memory of a meal, by watching television for example, increases the amount of food we consume during the next meal.

Researchers have found that people with amnesia will eat again if presented with food, even if they've already eaten, because they have no memory of the meal.

Easy remedy. Sit down to eat meals for at least 20-30 minutes with family and friends with little or no distractions!

A husband, wife, and one of their children recently did the 23andMe/Pure Genomics screening. Among the genetic deficiencies, the husband presented with a yellow COMT gene, which means he received one genetic deficiency from a parent. The wife presented with a red COMT, which means she presented with a deficiency from both parents. Hence, the child had a 75% chance of receiving at least one COMT deficiency.

The husband and wife had one thing going for them. They were both super vigilant about adhering to healthy lifestyles during the fertility, prenatal, and pregnancy stages.

Whether it was pure luck or from the beneficial choices they made, the child presented with a green COMT gene, which means the child has no deficiency for this gene.

The husband in this story is me and the family is mine.

It can only help to give your child every opportunity to buck the odds with optimal diet, nutrients, and lifestyle. Our goal is to discover and produce many more examples like mine.

Have a happy, healthy day. Steve
Super Bowl Special
Steve and Bonnie: It's so tempting to overeat and drink too much on Super Bowl Sunday, especially with the enticing adds!

It's also difficult, when you have a group of friends and family over, to meet everyone's dietary needs or restrictions.

To solve the problem, we serve a wonderful taco/tortilla bar that includes bowls of the following:

-shredded organic lettuce
-guacamole (Trader Joes and Costcos are very mild)
-diced grilled chicken breast
-ground cooked grass fed beef (sautéed with onion or garlic salt)
-black beans (organic canned is fine)
-white beans (such as Cannelini)
-grilled or sautéed onion slices (with olive oil and salt)
-thinly sliced grilled or sautéed red pepper slices (with olive oil and salt)
-shredded organic Mexican cheese
-sheep Manchego cheese slices
-2% Greek yogurt (instead of sour cream)
-sliced pitted black olives (canned organic is okay)
-thinly sliced Jalapeño peppers
-organic non GMO corn or bean chips
-gluten free crackers (Mary's and Absolutely Gluten free brands are great)
-Food for Life soft corn tortillas
-Food for Life brown rice tortillas
-Trader Joes small hard taco shells
-chunks of limes and lemons

-electrolyte or cold filtered water
-sparkling waters (especially Gerolsteiner and Pelligrino)
-unsweetened coconut/almond/cashew milk
-iced fruit tea (such as mango)

-vodka (some gluten free)
-good quality tequila
-all natural mango and lime tequila mixes (Williams and Sonoma and Binny's typically carry them)
-gluten free beer (especially Redbridge made from Sorghum)
-dry white wine such as Pinot Grigio (don't serve red unless you want to destroy your carpets!)

-Cut up fruit such as a variety of melons and pineapple
-assorted organic berries
-green and red grapes
-homemade mango sorbet (whip frozen mango chunks with a dash of lemon and agave syrup or coconut nectar)
-mango is a great digestive aid
-individual assortment of 70%+ dark chocolates
-hot decaf tea and decaf coffee/espresso

There is something for everyone. No one will go home hungry, and they will thank you in the morning for not feeling sluggish or sick!

Why Is This Graphic So Important?
Bonnie and Steve: If one or more of these boxes are yellow or red, then you have genetic deficiencies that may impair your ability to break down and move toxins from your body. The great thing is that you can prevent impairment with diet, lifestyle, and nutrient modification.
