NCI Well Connect Mid-Week Brief
March 1, 2017
Dear Steve,

DID YOU KNOW that eating an egg a day may improve cognitive performance? A study in last month's American Journal of Clinical Nutrition found that egg consumption was associated with significantly better scores on language and frontal lobe functioning tests in subjects after 4-year follow-up visits.

Last day to take advantage of February sale items. First day to get March sale items. See below.

This great fact sheet explains their probiotic quality commitment.

We are the first midwest distributor of this scrumptious snack. Like real food? How about only two ingredients: mango and coconut. We can't sell them over the web yet, but we carry them in our office or you can call/email/add to web ordering instructions if you want to buy a package(s).

Metagenics sent a memo alerting us of a problem customers have had purchasing counterfeit and adulterated products from third party sources on the Internet. Pure Encapsulations alerted us to similar occurrences with their products. Overheated products, expired products, labels removed, QR codes removed, and label tampering are all major issues. Read the memo here.

We are not a third party vendor. We are an authorized vendor for Metagenics and Pure Encapsulations.

Have a happy, healthy day. Steve and Bonnie
Diet Heals GI Disorders
Bonnie and Steve: Can diet alone be used to cure Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis (UC)? Researchers in a study from a recent issue of Journal of Clinical Gastroenterology asked that question.

While we know, and you know, that this is achievable, to see it in a major medical journal is exciting nonetheless.

The study, which was performed on patients at Seattle Children's Hospital, found that diet alone brought 80 percent of those with active Crohn's and UC into clinical remission.

Children were put on a special diet called the specific carbohydrate diet (SCD) for 12 weeks as the sole intervention to treat their Crohn's or UC. SCD is a nutritionally balanced diet that removes grains, dairy, processed foods and sugars, except for honey. The diet promotes only natural, nutrient-rich foods, which includes vegetables, fruits, meats and nuts.

The SCD diet is very similar to what we use at Nutritional Concepts: the Low Residue Diet.

Why is this so exciting? Treatment for inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is limited and usually takes patients down one of two routes: steroids or medication, which can often lead to life-long side effects. Another concern is that medication and steroids only suppress the immune system and don't treat the underlying issue of the microbiome, the bacteria that lives in the digestive tract.

We also appreciate the lead researchers candor when suggesting, "Each person's disease is unique, just as each person is unique. SCD is another tool in our tool belt to help treat these patients. It may not be the best treatment option for everyone, but it is an effective treatment for those who wish to try a dietary therapy."
