Sumptuous Cruciferous
Bonnie and Steve: Cruciferous vegetables, which make up a class of plants called Brassica, are more than just veggies. Broccoli, Brussels Sprouts, cabbage, among many others, are superfoods.

Two incredibly powerful chemicals in cruciferous, sulforaphane and diindoylmethane, have been closely linked to cancer prevention. There is good reason why, as these two studies show. 

Evidence in the January issue of Food and Chemical Toxicology supports sulforaphane as a phytochemical that could inhibit tumor development and could protect normal tissues through making our genes function better and directly affect cancer cell death.

As alluded to in the aforementioned study, sulforaphane exerts cancer preventive effects by activating the most important gene for detoxification, Nrf2. The study, from the January issue of Diabetes, found sulforaphane also does the following:
  • Accelerates adipose (fat) tissue browning.
  • Decreases abundance of bacterial family Desulfobivrionaceae in the gut, which overproduces toxins that can contribute to obesity and metabolic syndrome.
Cruciferous is nature's way of neutralizing the detrimental impact of rogue cell activity through proper detoxification. It is as effective as any cancer preventive that exists.
