The Power of Breathing.

If you can regulate your breath, you can regulate pretty much anything in life. The power of your breath is immense. It keeps you alive and helps you navigate the physical and emotional challenges of life. Usually, when you're angry, stressed or scared, the rhythm of your breath accelerates, sometimes so much that you can hardly articulate a word.


But here is the thing. You have all the resources available to you at every moment to slow down your breath and re-center yourself. All you have to do is to focus your attention to your heart center, maybe close your eyes and take even inhales and exhales until your heart rate goes down. It's very easy and anybody can do it. It just requires you to focus all your attention onto your breath for a few moments. And remember, if you have power over your breath, you are probably much more powerful than you think you are.


Recipe Du Jour:
Decadent Easter and Passover Dessert
Flourless Chocolate-Walnut Torte

-Unsalted butter, room temperature, for pan

-1/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder, plus more for pan

-1/2 cup plus 1 teaspoon coconut oil

-10 ounces bittersweet chocolate, chopped

-1 1/4 cups raw sugar

-4 large eggs

-1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract

-1/2 teaspoon coarse salt

-1/2 cup ground toasted walnuts, plus 2 T. finely chopped walnuts, for serving


1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Butter an 8" round cake pan. Line bottom with parchment; butter parchment and dust with cocoa.

2. Melt 1/2 cup oil and 8 ounces chocolate in a heatproof bowl set over a pan of simmering water, stirring, until smooth. Remove from heat; whisk in sugar. Whisk in eggs, 1 at a time. Whisk in cocoa, vanilla, and salt; fold in ground walnuts. Spread butter in a pan.

3. Bake until set, about 35 minutes. Let cool completely, preferable overnight. Run a knife around edge to loosen; remove from pan.

4. Melt remaining 2 ounces chocolate and 1 teaspoon oil in same manner as in step 2; spread on cake. Sprinkle chopped walnuts in center. Cut into wedges; serve. SERVES: 10

Savings Through Self-Management.
Impacts Those Most With Chronic Disease.

Among the most studied evidence-based programs, Stanford's Chronic Disease Self-Management Program (CDSMP) has been shown to help participants improve their health behaviors, health outcomes, and reduce healthcare utilization. It consists of six sessions hosted over six consecutive weeks that empowers participants to develop skills necessary for medical, social role, and emotional management of chronic conditions.


Findings from BMC Health showed significant reductions in ER visits as well as hospitalizations. This equates to potential net savings of $364 per participant and a national savings of $3.3 billion if 5% of adults with one or more chronic conditions were reached.


Findings emphasize the value of public health prevention interventions and the need for policies to support widespread adoption of self-management programs. People living with prevalent chronic conditions such as heart disease, cancer, diabetes, stroke, and chronic lung disease account for 75% of healthcare expenditures in the US. Those with chronic conditions is projected to increase by 37% (46 million people) by 2030.

Leafy Greens' Genetic Effect 

Immune cells that play an essential role in protecting intestinal health can be boosted by consuming leafy greens, according to new research from Nature Immunology.


Particular consumption of cruciferous leafy greens (i.e. bok choy, kale, swiss chard) control the activity of vital immune cells through the activation of a particular gene known as T-bet. The immune cells, known as innate lymphoid cells (ILCs), play a vital role in protecting the body from infection by 'bad' pathogenic bacteria in our gut - and have also been suggested to play an important role in controlling food allergies, inflammatory diseases, obesity, and even bowel cancers.


The proteins in cruciferous vegetables could be part of the same signalling pathway that is used by T-bet - and might therefore play a role in producing these critical immune cells.


Bonnie: As we have said many times before, vegetables harmoniously orchestrate our genetic switches, while processed, sugar-laden foods viciously shock our genetic switches.

Mental Minute
Mindfulness Improves Eating Habits.

A study in the April issue of Appetite examined the effects of a mindfulness-based intervention to foster healthy eating. Specifically, researchers tested whether a brief mindfulness manipulation can prevent the portion size effect, and reduce overeating on unhealthy snacks when hungry.


Subjects were served a small or a large portion of chocolate chip cookies after listening to an audio book or performing a mindfulness exercise.


When presented with a large compared to a small portion, subjects consumed more cookies. This was not affected by the mindfulness intervention or by hunger. However, while control participants ate more unhealthy food when hungry than when not hungry, participants in the mindfulness condition did not.


Findings confirm mindfulness-based interventions may be effective to reduce effects of hunger on unhealthy food consumption.

Participants who exercised moderate-to-vigorous intensity for 10 or more minutes per session were no healthier than those whose sessions were ten minutes or less as long as the total active effort was the same, according to a study in Medicine and Science in Sports and Exercise.
Steve: You can get a great workout in a short amount of time. Just make sure that when exercising in short bursts, keep rest time to a minimum.

Drain Opener: Most Dangerous Substance in Your House

Drain openers are so dangerous because they are caustic, meaning they are either extremely acidic or extremely basic on the pH scale. A caustic substance can cause significant chemical burn injury to any body tissue it comes in contact with, especially eyes, skin, mouth and lungs. A small sip of these products can cause serious damage to the tissues of the esophagus, stomach and intestines.


Steve: Every three months, I apply enzyme drain-opener as a preventive measure. Enzymes are environmentally friendly and are much safer to have around the house. They do not work as well for drain blockages, but using them as a preventive will hopefully avoid drain catastrophe!

Is There an Age Where Our Earliest Memory Fades?

Psychologists have now documented that age seven is when these earliest memories tend to fade into oblivion, a phenomenon known as "childhood amnesia." The study, which appeared in journal Memory, involved interviewing children about past events in their lives, starting at age three. Different subsets of the group of children were then tested for recall of these events at ages five, six, seven, eight and nine.

The study is the first empirical demonstration of the onset of childhood amnesia. They actually recorded the memories of children, and then we followed them into the future to track when they forgot these memories.

While infants use memory to learn language and make sense of the world around them, they do not yet have the sophisticated neural architecture needed to form and hold onto more complex forms of memory.

Young children's brains are like colanders with large holes trying to retain these little pieces of memory. The lead author explained it as follows: "As the water rushes out, so do many of the grains of orzo. Adults, however, use a fine net instead of a colander for a screen."
