Hot Trends in Food.

More than half of Americans say they want more protein in their diets, while the percentage that claim to look for protein on the Nutrition Facts panel has increased from 20% in 2009 to 25% in

2013, according to market researcher NPD Group. The data comes from a recent survey of 2,211 US primary grocery shoppers, and correlates with the findings of other consumer studies suggesting that the high-protein trend - seen by some as faddish - is here to stay.

Nut and Seed Butters, Organic Eggs

Nut and seed butters (up 51%) and eggs (39.5%) are the fastest growing specialty products across supermarkets, natural food stores, specialty food retailers and foodservice, show the findings of the Specialty Food Association's Food Industry 2014 report.

The largest specialty category continues to be cheese and cheese substitutes, followed by the meat, poultry and seafood category, and chips, pretzels and snacks.

Steve: An interest in nutrition is driving growth in nut and seed butters, as alternatives to peanut butter and [traditional] protein. Interest in specialty eggs is most likely a reaction to a lot of food safety outbreaks with mass produced eggs. People are looking for organic, local and eggs that do not come from giant farms.

Specialty Stores
While mainstream supermarkets account for about two-thirds of specialty sales, they're losing share to specialty food stores, due in part to customer service. Consumers are looking for smaller, friendlier places to shop. Places where the employees know the people coming in and the employees know the products, according to the Specialty Food Report.
Steve: We strive to provide this kind of service to our clients as well :)

President Clinton Not a Vegan Anymore?

When news first came out that former President Bill Clinton had become a vegan after his quadruple bypass surgery, there was a major trend toward veganism in the US.

In an article that appeared this week in the New York Times, it seems that the President is not vegan after all. While he adheres to ultra-healthy lifestyle ideals, he balances his diet with clean, lean animal protein.

This is timely because there are recent developments that show genetically why it is hard to consistently be a vegan.
