NCI Well Connect: April 25, 2016
Dear Steve,

DID YOU KNOW that people who eat fresh fruit on most days are at lower risk of heart attack and stroke than people who rarely eat fresh fruit? According to new research from New England Journal of Medicine, the findings came from a seven year study of half a million adults who did not have a history of cardiovascular diseases or anti-hypertensive treatments when they first joined the study.

Have a happy, healthy day. Steve and Bonnie

Supplement Improves Mood in One Hour
Bonnie and Steve: A recent study in Age suggests that a multivitamin and mineral supplement improves mood within one hour, but why?

The double blind, placebo-controlled, randomized trial involving women between 50 and 75 years old, excluded those who smoked, had diabetes, cardiovascular disease, dementia, stroke, head trauma, alcohol abuse, clinically diagnosed anxiety, depression, and psychiatric disorders, as well as those taking anti-depressant medication, anti-anxiety medication, high-dose anti-coagulants, anti-cholinergic drugs or acetylcholinesterase inhibitors. Participants were required to abstain from supplementation with vitamin E, multivitamins, B vitamin complex, gingko biloba, fish oil, and St John's Wort for 4 weeks preceding the study visit.

The oral multivitamin mineral herbal (MVMH) tablet contained folic acid, vitamins A, B1, B2, B5, B6, B12, C, E, and zinc. It also contained B3, D3, calcium, and magnesium, as well as 18 herbs and 3 strains of probiotics.

After one hour, only the MVMH group had a significant reduction in The Depression and Anxiety Stress scale (DASS) and the Bond-Lader mood/visual analogue scales (VAS) for stress, anxiety, concentration, physical fatigue, and mental fatigue Only the MVMH group had a significant reduction in VAS stress rating.

The authors suggest that the MVMH causes acute improvements in vascular endothelial function, allowing for better oxygen and nutrient delivery to the brain. It is also possible that mitochondrial function improves within 1 hour of consumption. B-vitamins, vitamin D, magnesium, zinc (if deficient), and possibly some of the herbs are causal factors for this result.
New Genetic Test for Vitamin A & D Absorption

Bonnie and Steve:
If one or more of these boxes are yellow or red, then you have genetic deficiencies that may impair your ability to break down and move toxins from your body. You can prevent impairment with diet, lifestyle, and nutrient modification.

The graphic on top is the methylation cycle. The bottom graphic is coming soon: genes associated with how well you can absorb vitamin A & D. If you have not done your 23andMe genetic test, yet, what are you waiting for?
