Dear Valued Subscriber,

Did you know that based upon a recent survey, 39 percent of teens are choosing organic food options? Exciting news for anyone concerned with the future health of our nation, especially in light of a study in the July issue of Environmental Research that found consumption of an organic diet for one week significantly reduced urinary levels of organophosphate pesticides in adults.

Have a happy, healthy week. Bonnie and Steve Minsky

Optimize Your Nutrient Requirements.

For the first time, data from the government-funded study, NHANES, shows that over half the population uses multivitamin-minerals (MVMM). Previous data from NHANES 2003-2006 showed usage to be about 33% of the entire population.

Children who were reported to have good, very good, or excellent health status were more likely to use MVMM than were children with poor or fair health.

MVMM usage significantly decreased the percentage of the population who did not meet the Estimated Average Requirements (EAR) for most vitamins and minerals measured in NHANES.

These data also complement previous reports that the best-nourished people are making repeated good choices, in terms of both foods and supplements, and it does not appear that individuals with more adequate nutrient intakes use MVMM to compensate for poor dietary habits.

The conclusion from the Journal of the American College of Nutrition study is that micronutrient sufficiency is not currently being achieved through food solutions in large portions of the population. MVMM supplements contribute to a greater number of individuals meeting their recommended intakes of almost all micronutrients measured by NHANES.

Men Who Want to Optimize Their Vision

Long-term daily multivitamin supplement lowers cataract risk in men by 9 to 13% depending on the type of cataract, according to a study of nearly 15,000 male physicians in Ophthalmology. Given that an estimated 10 million adults in the United States have impaired vision due to cataract, even a modest reduction in risk of cataract has potential to improve public health outcomes.

Older Persons Who Want to Optimize Their Hearing

In a large population of 50 to 80 year-old persons, the group with the highest intake of carotenoids, retinol, riboflavin, niacin, and vitamin C had significantly better hearing than that the group with the lowest intake.

Specifically, hearing in those who used dietary supplementation was significantly better in all frequency ranges than those of subjects who did not take any dietary supplementation. Vitamin C stood out as having the highest impact, according to the study in the May issue of American Journal of Clinical Nutrition.
