NCI Well Connect Mid-Week Brief
May 17, 2017
Dear Steve,

DID YOU KNOW that a poll taken by Medscape for its readers, most of whom are health professionals, asked the question: "Do you think the US healthcare business model incentivizes financial gain more than patient outcomes?"

81% of the health professionals polled chose yes!

This is so sad and disappointing.

  1. Let us know if you need help figuring out how to email your genetic data to us.
  2. Once received, we upload the data into our Pure Genomics database and generate your report.
  3. We then make an appointment!
Have a happy, healthy day. Steve and Bonnie
Problem With Newly Approved Meds

Bonnie and Steve:
We were truly astonished that the following study was published given the power and influence Big Pharma has. Suffice it to say, we were pleased, but not surprised, with the results.

According to a study in the May issue of JAMA, nearly one third of drugs newly approved by the FDA are affected by safety issues that were not known at the time of approval.

Biologic and psychiatric drugs, as well as those that received accelerated approval or were approved within 60 days of the statutory decision deadline, are the most vulnerable to postmarket safety events.

As the authors adeptly state, "there are important differences between efficacy in randomized controlled trials and effectiveness once a drug hits the real world".

The median time between drug approval and the first postmarket safety event was 4.2 years, and nearly one in three of the drugs had one or more safety events at 10 years.

This is why we never advise our clients to try new drugs until they are on the market for at least three or four years. This may even be too soon now. As we have seen here, some adverse events do not present themselves until 10 years after approval!

Where does this leave us?

Unfortunately, the newly appointed FDA Commissioner, Scott Gottlieb, wants to fast-track drug approvals with less oversight and fewer safety studies. This would be a disastrous development for the safety of Americans.
