Blood Sugar Disorders
A study in the February issue of Diabetologia provides evidence that magnesium does influence diabetes and prediabetes risk.

For the first time, researchers were able to pinpoint specific variations in magnesium-regulating genes that changed change diabetes risk by affecting blood magnesium levels.

In another first, over a seven year period, they were able to show that signs of a blood sugar disorder created urinary magnesium wasting/loss, thus lowering blood magnesium level over time.

The study supports a potential role of magnesium levels in the development of diabetes, however the theory is partly mediated through insulin resistance.

Daily consumption of 500 mg magnesium for equal to or more than 8 weeks by depressed patients suffering from magnesium deficiency leads to improvements in depression status and magnesium levels. Therefore, assessment of magnesium levels and resolving this deficiency positively influence the treatment of depressed patients, according to a study in the March issue of Nutrition.

One of the genes we test for associated with mood, COMT, is vitally dependent upon magnesium for it function. We have seen many with a family history of depression and mood disorders, or have it themselves, improve with extra magnesium when a COMT mutation is discovered.

The aforementioned stated that 20 years of follow-up showed that magnesium intake has an effect on the risk of developing depression.

According to a study from the December issue of MMW Fortschritte Der Medizin, in a group given daily supplementation of 400 mg of magnesium, indicators of parasympathetic activity increased, and their stress index decreased, both of which are positive indicators for stress reduction. In the control group, there were no positive changes. Vagus activity, and thus the adaptive and regenerative capacity of the body, veritably increased by magnesium supplementation.

The researchers implore that persons with mental and physical stress can benefit from a daily intake of magnesium, specifically, restlessness, irritability, lack of concentration, sleep disorder or depression.

According to a study in the December issue of Panminerva Medica, researchers explored subjects' psychological stress intensity under the effect of dietary supplements of magnesium, probiotics, and vitamins after one month of intake.

Under the effect of the supplementation, psychological stress and fatigue of the subjects decreased significantly, and was fully maintained one month after discontinuing supplement intake.
