DID YOU KNOW that chemicals in plastic rear their ugly heads in the most unusual places? A study in last month's BMJ  found that phthalates, plasticizing agents banned from children's toys but still used in medical tubing, are linked to the later development of attention deficit disorders in children admitted to hospital with serious illness.

In Monday's eNewsletter, we recommended too much stevia in our Perfect Smoothie recipe. Unless you like it sickeningly sweet, we suggest 1/4 to 1/2 teaspoon.

CoQ10, Selenium Power the Heart
Bonnie and Steve: According to a study in the December 2015 issue of PLoS One, in subjects who supplemented with Co-Enzyme Q10 (CoQ10) and selenium for four years, there was a 49% lower risk of death from both cardiovascular disease and heart disease after 10 years than those who did not supplement.

The study involved subjects who were given either 200 milligrams of CoQ10 and 200 micrograms of selenium per day for the first four years of the study. The other subjects were followed for the full 10 years but did not receive any supplementation. Throughout the study, each subject continued to take any prescription medications they were on before the study began.

The reduced risk of death from cardiovascular disease and heart disease was evident even after the four-year supplementation had ceased in some subjects.

Researchers state that an adequate presence of coenzyme Q10 is needed for proper function of selenium-containing proteins as well as CoQ10's benefits to blood vessel health and both its powerful antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. We cannot produce CoQ10. We can only get it from food and supplements.

The number one cause of CoQ10 depletion is statin medication. Beta Blockers and antidepressants can also deplete CoQ10. Vegetarians and vegans are at risk for low CoQ10 stores, as it is found mostly in animal products.

Finally, after age 40, CoQ10 deficiency is a distinct possibility. Simply, we cannot get enough CoQ10 from food to replace what our body uses to create energy. Thus, supplementation is a great option.

Selenium is usually found in most multivitamin mineral supplements. Check yours to see if you have close to 200 micrograms (not milligrams).
