NCI Well Connect: June 20, 2016
Dear Steve,

DID YOU KNOW that 15 minutes of daily exercise was associated with a 22% lower risk of death in adults aged 65 who were followed for 12 years? The researchers, who presented their findings on behalf of the European Society of Cardiology, confirm that age is not an excuse to shun exercise, when this low a level of daily exercise can be so beneficial.

A client sent this in after reading our piece about hospital policy not allowing supplements.
"When I read the article in yesterday's newsletter, it struck a chord with me, as my husband just had major back surgery at Lutheran General in May. While we were very pleased with the care he received, and he is recovering very well, they also did not allow him to take any of his supplements while at the hospital (16 days). He could only take his BPH meds and his hay fever tablets (Allegra). The rest - probiotics, digestive enzymes, magnesium, multivitamins, etc. - had to stay at home. And after discharge they would not allow him to take anything more than what he was already taking beforehand (on his official list) - not even the supplements which I had especially gotten from you for his recovery.

This seems inconsistent with the medical establishment's saying supplements are not effective - if that were so, they shouldn't interfere" with recovery!

Just wanted to pass this experience along - very frustrating.

Thanks for all the great info you pass along to us! Katy"

While Pure Encapsulations has not sent out a memo about this issue, they have alerted us to similar occurrences with their products.

Weight Policy Changing
Bonnie and Steve: New clients call up frequently contact us to address body weight. When we say that our focus is on optimizing the whole person, and as this occurs, body weight normalizes at the body's own pace, many thank us for the information and go elsewhere.

New evidence-based obesity-management guidelines from the American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists, published in late May in Endocrine Practice, recommend approaching overweight and obesity as a chronic medical condition, with the focus firmly on improving patient health rather than just body weight.

The AACE recommend screening for 16 weight-related comorbidities. Based on that information, guidance is given for the use of individual lifestyle modification, and when to consider bariatric surgery.

While the guideline is very comprehensive, it can be done in the context of a short routine patient visit. This is a great start for treating the while person, instead of just weight.

New Chronic Pain and Inflammation Therapies
Steve: We are constantly searching for safe ways to help clients with pain and inflammation.

Many patients do not respond to existing pharmaceuticals. Opioids are horrifically addictive. Long-term use of NSAIDs and COX-Inhibitors have major side effects and toxicity.

Supplemental therapies such as curcumin/turmeric do not agree with some who are overly acidic and/or salicylate intolerant.

Mind/body therapies are effective, but many do not have the patience to see it through or make it a daily ritual.

In our opinion, dietary modification is the ultimate long-term pain relief therapy, but has shown to be most difficult to adhere to as a total lifestyle change. The triggers we are exposed to daily are too numerous and tempting. Our food system sets us up, and wants us, to fail.

So in this current environment, what are we to do about chronic inflammation and pain? Don't give up. Use the tools we have given you to keep working at it.

A major piece of the puzzle we have not had at our disposal until recently is genetics. Now that we have, and will continue to, incorporate genetic analysis into our client care, inflammation and pain triggers become more clear and easier to treat.

Finally, we believe that Metagenics has introduced a wonderful option for those with chronic pain, autoimmune disorders, under- or over-exertion from exercise, those with circulation issues, for the 20% who find no relief from NSAIDs, Cox-Inhibitors, and especially Opioids, or want a pharmaceutical-free alternative.

It is called OmegaGenics SPM Active. The pain control study Metagenics done on this product compared favorably to morphine and COX-2 inhibitors.

The Short Explanation
Part of chronic disease is a deficiency to convert or activate the inflammation resolution process. We are bombarded with constant insults in the form of food, toxins, and stress, to name a few. If we are unable to resolve these insults, our immune system begins to grossly misfire. Overweight and obesity intensifies this process even more.

While anti-inflammatory medication can block pain receptors, it delays inflammation resolution. SPM Active contains a very highly concentrated dose of the two components in EPA and DHA fish oil that are most associated with inflammation resolution. We call them resolvins.

SPM Active not only addresses pain relief, but also tissue recovery and repair, which pharmaceuticals do not do. Part of the problem, especially with joint conditions, is that there are few options for tissue regeneration. Studies have shown that this is possible when your immune system is reprogrammed to relax.

Why not just take a lot of fish oil? For starters, your blood would be too thin. You would have to take tens of thousands of milligrams to match the concentration in SPM Active. The fish harvested for this product are singled out especially for their high resolvin content.

The other problem with taking straight fish oil is that a large portion of the population are genetically incapable of transferring omega-3 into usable resolvins via the COX-2 pathway. This is the same reason why COX-2 Inhibitors do not work or are harmful in some patients. SPM Active bypasses this genetic predisposition.

A loading dose of SPM Active can take between 4 to 12 weeks to do its thing. Then, a simple maintenance dose is all that's needed after that. In those who have been suffering forever, the results Metagenics has seen in research has been nothing short of stunning. For many of you, this could be a welcome, safe, effective option to existing therapies.

If you would like the long explanation, please send Steve an email request at and I will email back the details.
Genetic Wellness Testing & Analysis

Bonnie and Steve: If one or more of these boxes are yellow or red, then you have genetic deficiencies that may impair your ability to break down and move toxins from your body, as well as absorb vitamins A & D. The great thing is that you can prevent impairment with diet, lifestyle, and nutrient modification.

For example, if you cannot adequately convert Beta Carotene from food into absorbable vitamin A (retinol), this greatly increases your risk for the eye disease Macular Degeneration. Food and supplement modification addresses this issue.

The graphic on top is the methylation cycle. The bottom graphic is genes associated with vitamins A & D. If you have not done your 23andMe genetic test, yet, what are you waiting for?

UP4 Acidophilus Discontinued

Bonnie and Steve: Much to our chagrin, UAS Life Sciences has discontinued UP4 Acidophilus (yellow label). Their reasoning was: "it's not a big seller" and "customers want multiple strains per capsule".

When we mentioned that in many instances, those who suffer from yeast imbalances need and can only tolerate acidophilus, they had no credible response. The cold reality is that even supplement manufacturers go with what sells, not what serves the best interest of its diverse customers.

Luckily, we have options to cater to your individual needs.
  1. If you no longer struggle with yeast imbalance, you can switch to UP4 Daily (lactobacillus acidophilus and bifidus).
  2. For everyone else, we contract manufactured our own Acidophilus product: Well Probiotic L. Acidophilus. We will ship this product with refrigeration during the warmer months. but you can store it exactly as you did with UP4 Acidophilus (just refrigerate after opening).
We have never been about "what sells". Unfortunately, we are penalized for this as evidenced by the discontinuation of certain Twinlab products and now this.

We will continue to focus solely on what's best for your individual needs, as well as our own, because everyone here, in addition to our friends and families, all use the same products you do!
