DID YOU KNOW that an article in last week's Chicago Tribune falsely lumped in non-nutritive sweetener stevia with artificial sweeteners? Several clients voiced opposition to the piece and suggested that we remind everyone that when stevia is used alone, not as a blend with erythritol (PureVia and Truvia) or other sweetener or artificial sweetener, it is perfectly safe.

We still recommend using organic stevia cultivated in Paraguay if possible.

Want the Good or Bad News First?

Bonnie and Steve:
 Let's start with the bad news.

Almost one in 10 US adults has diabetes, while more than one in three has prediabetes, according to the latest National Diabetes Statistics Report by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC). 30.3 million adults living in the United States or 9.4% of the population have diabetes, 7.2 million American adults are not aware that they have diabetes, and another 84.1 million have prediabetes.

Nine in 10 adults with prediabetes are not aware they have a condition that places them at high risk to progress to type 2 diabetes within 5 years. This is important because you can cut the risk of type 2 diabetes in half by being more active and making healthier food choices.

The CDC report also points out that the cost of caring for individuals with diabetes is more than twice the cost of caring for those without diabetes, and the mortality risk is also 50% greater for those with compared to those without diabetes.

And now for the good news!

Not smoking, drinking mildly, and maintaining a healthy weight can add 7 years of disability-free life, according to new research in this month's Health Affairs. The analysis used 14 years of data from 15,000 Americans aged 50 to 89 years.

The healthier group had never smoked cigarettes, were not obese, and drank alcohol in moderation (fewer than 14 drinks a week for men and fewer than 7 for women). Compared with the entire US population, they had a life expectancy at age 50 years that was 7 years longer and an onset of disability that was delayed by up to 6 years.

In addition, more than one third of global dementia cases may be preventable by addressing nine lifestyle factors that affect an individual's risk, according to the findings of a new comprehensive report from The Lancet Commission on Dementia Prevention, Intervention, and Care.

They found that nine lifestyle factors are responsible for 35% of dementia burden. These factors include not completing secondary education in early life; hypertension; obesity and hearing loss in midlife; and smoking, depression, physical inactivity, social isolation, and diabetes in later life.

The study did not even include dietary and genetic factors, alcohol use, visual impairment, air pollution, or sleep, all factors that would contribute quite a bit more than 35% of dementia burden. If all of these factors were addressed as well, many more dementia cases could be prevented than just one third.

The lead author emphatically states, "Our results show it is never too early or never too late to make lifestyle changes that will make a difference."
