NCI Well Connect Mid-Week Brief
July 5, 2017
Dear Steve,

DID YOU KNOW that commentary in last week's JAMA gave credence to the Fast Mimicking eating style as a possibility for antiaging? We agree that Fast Mimicking has strong credentials for efficacy in protecting telomeres, linked to prolonged life, but it's dependent upon your genetic makeup.

Metagenics sent a memo alerting us of a problem customers have had purchasing counterfeit and adulterated products from third party sources on the Internet. Pure Encapsulations alerted us to similar occurrences with their products. Overheated products, expired products, labels removed, QR codes removed, and label tampering are all major issues. Read the memo here.

We are not a third party vendor. We are an authorized vendor for Metagenics and Pure Encapsulations.

Unexpected Diabetes Fighters

Bonnie and Steve:
Two recent studies piqued our interest with substances we would not usually equate with diabetes prevention or treatment.

A powerful phytochemical found in broccoli and the cruciferous vegetable family, called sulforaphane, may provide a new option for treating type 2 diabetes, according to a study in the June issue of Science Translational Medicine.

Sulforaphane reduced exaggerated glucose production from the liver, which is a central mechanism in type 2 diabetes. The research is the first to show that sulforaphane targets increased glucose production by the liver.

The study used highly concentrated broccoli extract, the equivalent to 11 pounds of it! Remember though, this is to treat an existing condition. Eating one to two servings daily of cruciferous veggies is a phenomenal preventative.

The investigators tested sulforaphane in a double-blind placebo controlled randomized trial in patients with type 2 diabetes. All participants were taking metformin. The broccoli-extract group HbA1c levels decreased significantly after 12 weeks, while the placebo group showed no difference from baseline. Participants who started the study with dysregulated diabetes showed significantly reduced fasting blood glucose with broccoli extract compared with placebo.

Sulforaphane is available in concentrated supplement form. We currently recommend it for individuals with strong genetic methylation and detoxification mutations. This would be also be a safe option for some individuals with type 2 diabetes.

Vitamin A
A new study in Endocrine Journal found that vitamin A deficiency decreases insulin production capability of pancreatic betacells by 30%. This is not good.

The study also found that without vitamin A, betacells were less able to resist inflammation. Where complete deficiency occurred, this resulted in cell death. This is especially significant in children, who must absorb a sufficient amount of vitamin A through their diet.

Since we start genetic screening for the vitamin A, we have found that many of our clients have a partial or full mutations that impairs transfer of beta carotene from food into vitamin A, called retinol, that is delivered into the cell. There is a simple solution to bypass this genetic mutation if discovered.
