DID YOU KNOW that short-term memory loss may be related to lack of adequate hydration? A study from this month's American Journal of Clinical Nutrition has shown, for the first time, that because we can lose less than one percent body mass during everyday living due to water loss, our cognitive functioning could be affected. Researchers found subjects that drank enough water to stay hydrated had better daily cognitive functioning.

Doing Protein a Disservice
Bonnie and Steve: Public health experts and the media have a protein problem. Specifically, they have a problem delineating what is good protein and what is not. For this, they are doing the public a great disservice. Consuming high quality, humanely raised, less processed animal protein is crucial for a healthy population.

When a study published early this month from JAMA Internal Medicine linked animal protein consumption with higher rates of mortality, the media and many public health experts pounced.

The reality was that the study presented nothing new. Conventional red meat, especially when processed, increases the risk of mortality. No surprise here. Of course, the researchers did not focus on those who ate grass-fed beef. Eating beef that is raised on pasture, in moderation, is a healthful choice.

Furthermore, the association of animal protein intake with elevated mortality risk only applied to participants with at least one factor associated with an unhealthy lifestyle -- being either obese or underweight, heavy alcohol consumption, a history of smoking, or physical inactivity. In fact, the association disappeared in participants with a healthy lifestyle.

Of course, you did not get these details from the media. They could have also shared the following study below, but chose not to.

In the August issue of American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, researchers found that diets higher in plant and animal protein, independent of other dietary factors, were associated with cardiac benefits (higher HDL) and improved loss of fat mass, with no impairment of kidney function.
