NCI Well Connect Mid-Week Brief
August 2, 2017
Dear Steve,

DID YOU KNOW that in 1917, the U.S. Food Administration (notice "drug" was not even part of the FDA back then) had these six recommendations with regards to food:

1. Buy it with thought
2. Cook it with care
3. Use less wheat and meat
4. Buy local foods
5. Serve just enough
6. Use what is left. Don't waste it.

Could you imagine the backlash now if the FDA created an image like the one pictured above?!

A brand new Pure Genomics panel, Cognition and Mental Health, is available. Paid NCI Well Connect Members can simply email us for updated results. Non-paying members can purchase a membership, make an appointment, or access their update for $25.

Have a happy, healthy day! Steve and Bonnie
Energize Your Cells

Bonnie and Steve:
Mitochondria generate 90% of all of our cellular energy. There are a multitude of reasons why mitochondria may fail to perform efficiently with our modern lifestyles, ranging from nutrient deficiencies to genetic mutations to statin medication to stress. If mitochondria are not functioning properly or efficiently, cells are unable to make adequate ATP to meet our energy demands.

Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) is a crucial component for proper mitochondrial function and is concentrated in tissues that perform high levels of metabolism such as the liver, kidney, pancreas, and most importantly, the heart.

In addition to helping create energy, CoQ10 is an antioxidant that quenches free radicals and prevents damage to proteins, fats and DNA. CoQ10's antioxidant properties have also been shown to assist the immune system.

Research has focused on CoQ10's ability to treat or improve outcomes in cardiovascular disease (CVD) and dyslipidemia, diabetes (specifically insulin regulation), polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), infertility, fibromyalgia, cancer prevention, oxidative stress, and inflammation. Older persons are likely to have reduced levels of serum CoQ10.

As you have heard us state hundreds of times since statins were introduced, this cholesterol-lowering class of medication depletes CoQ10 in susceptible individuals, which in turn, creates a whole host of energy-depriving issues. This is why taking CoQ10 is a must while on statin medication.

CoQ10 is fat-soluble and is highly unstable when exposed to air. For this reason, we suggest whenever possible taking it in a tightly sealed softgel bound with an oil. We suggest taking it with or after a meal that contains some form of fat or oil.
