DID YOU KNOW that a single minute of exercise each day is linked to better bone health in women? New research from this month's International Journal of Epidemiology shows that brief bursts of high-intensity, weight-bearing activity equivalent to a medium-paced run for pre-menopausal women, or a slow jog for post-menopausal women, had better bone health than women who did less than one minute or nothing at all.

Nut Butters: Beyond Heart Healthy

Bonnie and Steve:
 Are you aware that nuts are heart healthy? Of course you are. This has been pounded into our public health psyche for years, and for good reason. The healthy fats and potent antioxidants that inhabit all nut varieties are well documented.

Now, a brand new reason to eat nuts has arrived...cancer prevention!

Recently, nut consumption has been associated with decreased risk of colorectal, endometrial, lung, and pancreatic cancers. The polyphenols, fiber, vitamins, and minerals in nuts are believed to be related to this protective effect.

No study has ever evaluated the effect of nut consumption on esophageal and gastric cancers, until this month's American Journal of Clinical Nutrition. Researchers followed over half a million participants, 50-71 years of age, from the NIH-AARP Diet and Health Study, for over 15 years.

Compared with those who did not consume nuts or peanut butter, participants in the highest category of nut consumption had a significantly lower risk of developing gastric noncardia adenocarcinoma.

Peanut butter was included in this study, but because of the risk of allergy and exposure to aflatoxin, proceed with caution when consuming peanut butter frequently.

In addition, not all nut butters are created equal. Many are loaded with added sugars. Try whenever possible to go for an unsweetened, or at the least, a lightly sweetened nut butter. Of course, choose organic whenever possible.
